TMI alert: I am allergic to birth control pills. I get hardcore hives and it’s a very itchy, miserable mess.
I know there are other options than the pill, but they suck. Nuvaring, condoms, other barriers: hassle. Depo shot: makes you a fatty psycho bitch and fucks up your body. Patch: have to be, like, underweight. Norplant or whatever: ewwww. IUD: have to have already had a kid and/or be over 30 or something. Abortion: some people “frown” on it. Abstinence: fuck that!
What’s a woman supposed to do when she does not want to risk that whole spawning thing, but can’t take the pill? I guess, ah, some of those options above. But seriously, damn. The choices are so sad. If my reaction to the pill wasn’t so severe, I’d just deal with it.
The last time I saw my doctor, she said an IUD might be a possibility*. I guess I’m only a few years away from 30, maybe I’d get a free pass. That does sound like the best option at this point. Fingers crossed!
For now, condoms. No babies! (I think that’s my warcry.)
*FYI, I am in a monogamous relationship. Anything else and you should always, always, always wrap up your naughty bits! Safety first! Herpes is forever!

I am allergic to almost all options of birth control. Like you I can’t take the pill, I can’t use the patch due to the fact I am allergic to the adhesive. I tired the IUD it was so bad. I bleed the whole month I tired it. The doctor didn’t place it right, so I was in pain the whole time. Very bad. I love the Nuvaring is amazing but after a year and a half on it. I also started to have allergic reaction to it. Did I mention I am allergic to latex so condoms are out of the question as well.
I feel your pain. I am now on depo shot. I needed the weight gain but I hate the rest of the effects on my body. I told my soon to be husband we might have to go a head and have a kid, just so I can get fixed. Crazy. I hope you find a solution to your problem.
I use Implanon, which is actually 99.9% effective – have you considered that?
Heaps better than the Pill which is only 99.7% effective, and that’s if you use it correctly!
I’m scared of birth control hormones for other reasons: underlying heart issues that would probably go aggro and kill me if I started using these hormones, and me generally being against pill popping as a principle. I track my cycle and that helps a lot, but I’d actually love to learn how to use a barrier method like a diaphragm. I like being hands-on.
I’m not against abortion, but I’d personally like that to be the last of the last resorts. If I didn’t want to have children someday, I’d make myself completely sterile. I just don’t want to deal with the second thoughts.
It’s hard figuring out which birth control fits, though. There’s not many of them (or any of them, really) that don’t come with some sort of compromise. Good luck with whatever you decide on?
*fingers corssed* for you!
I kind of understand why they want you to have a kid before you get an IUD, but seriously, if your over 25, they should just do it. You know how long it will be before you even attempt having a kid at that point.
Hehe, the last line reminded me of a Demetri Martin skit: “Glitter is the herpes of craft supplies. Once you get it on you, it’s on you forever.”
It sucks that you’re allergic to birth control pills though.
