If there is any confusion: for a few weeks, I had ohsoang.com on Tumblr. I wanted to see how I’d like it, if I wanted to make it a permanent thing. I enjoy the sense of community in Tumblr. It’s nice to be able to quickly and easily repost things. What I didn’t like (and this is only because I didn’t dig into it as far as perhaps I could have) was the lack of control I had on the website itself. Being restricted in the themes. And I’m a cheapass — I’m not going to pay real dollars for a premium theme on Tumblr. As a designer, you kind of want to be able to change any little thing on a whim. It was nice to be on Tumblr, but I missed using WordPress on my own server. I will still be using Tumblr! But it won’t be so much my personal website/blog.
I’ve had fun the past couple of days with customizing my WP theme again. I brought over some of the same elements I had that I liked. I’m not sure who still subscribes to this RSS (if anyone did!), but hopefully I’ll get some readers on my WP blog. There will be some cross-posting among my accounts. I know that runs the risk of being annoying, but I’m hoping to have some “exclusive” (lol that sounds so pretentious and weird) things that’ll only be here, or on Tumblr, or on Twitter.
The real perk, I think, from having made the move to Tumblr for awhile was feeling some inspiration to post things more often. I’ve even made it a bit of a habit. I come across so much online that I feel strongly about, and somehow it never occurred to me that I could make simple, concise, even amusing posts that are short. I used to kind of look at blogging like a chore or homework. I have to think up this whole big entry like it’s an essay! It doesn’t need to be though. A blog, besides being a journal, is a place to express yourself. Share things you’ve come across that you enjoyed or that made you think. I like microblogging. Some things really can be said using few words, or just an image.
I will of course still make long and detailed posts, such as this one! But between the wordy posts, I hope to share more quotes, photos, videos, or snippets of info. Anything I want! It’s tempting to say I do this “for myself and no one else”, but I think another point of maintaining a blog is to find people who have similar interests. Or even find people who are your polar opposite but there’s something about their personality and writing that keeps you coming back for more. So I will continue and perhaps try even more to open up and express myself and my thoughts here. We all have to get it out somehow!
